II. Content
The text is based on official material written in 1906 and 1907. As a result, it gives, on the one hand, a very detailed picture of what happened in military terms - when, where, and who - but, on the other hand, almost nothing about the motives or reasons behind the uprising, apart from a short mention of Maji Maji magic. The text is set out in chronological order and focuses on the action of each single military detachment of the German marine forces from the arrival of warships SMS "Thetis" and SMS "Seeadler" up to the occupation of the coast by the "Schutztruppe".
III. Further Remarks
The text is an official report written by officials of the German navy for other official members of the German army - in other words the style is'deadly'. It appeared as a supplement in the Marine - Rundschau and carries two maps of German -East Africa and five blueprints of various encounters between the German detachments and the insurgents.
As mentioned in the introduction, the presence of the German navy was meant to be a temporary measure with the aim of suppressing the uprising and preventing it from spreading further inland. The text clarifies right from the start that the whole operation was based on reaction, not on action. This is reflected in the pursuit of the insurgents. But the fact that the military actions of the troops were limited to chasing a phantom-like apparition, arguably obscures their importance for German colonial rule, that is to prevent a large group of about one thousand rebels from crossing the northern border of the Rufiyi river on 20 August 1905 near Kipo and thus from spreading further north.
