In his memoir, the colonial official Wilhelm Methner describes his experiences on a penal expedition from Nov./Dec. 1905 until Jan. 1906 to Morogoro district, in which he led a small detachment. Although he had not been involved in any spectacular battles at that time, his report details how Germans troops employed 'total war' tactics against the civil population (destruction and looting), especially in the mountainous region of Vidunda. In addition, he attempts to explain the outbreak of the rising.
III. Further Remarks
Wilhelm Methner (1871-1908) lived as a colonial civil official in German East Africa for 16 years. After having served in various posts in the colonial administration in the northern part of the colony, he became administrator of the southern part in 1905. In 1906, he became district chief of Moschi in the northeast until his death in Muansa on 2 March 1908.
He gives an eyewitness account of the situation at the end of the rising. He sometimes tends to overplay the adventurous aspects of travelling, but without excessive exaggerations.
