Author: Langheld, F.
Title: Ist die Hüttensteuer als Grund des ostafrikanischen Aufstands anzusehen?
Source: Deutsche Kolonialzeitung, Bd. XXII, Nr. 47, 25.11.1905, 493

II. Content
The author reports that Regierungsrat von Winterfeld had embarked on a journey to rebellious regions of the colony to discover the causes of the uprising. Langheld then questions the widely held opinion that the hut tax was the chief reason for the uprising. He asserts that the "native" people would not find the tax unjust. since they had to pay far greater tributes to their chiefs and the sultan of Zanzibar in pre-colonial times. The Germans had created a just tax system in the coastal region within only seven years, which was a great achievement for the colony and its people. Because tax was low, people would mostly accept these measures.

III. Further Remarks
The author of the article was one of the German officers responsible for introducing the hut tax of 1898 in the colony.
He defends this measure and denies allegations that the introduction of taxation lead to the uprising.
